Dynamic Squad Changes: Rachin Ravindra In, Daryl Mitchell Rested!
Coach Gary Stead mentioned that Devon Conway, who missed the fourth T20I due to Covid-19, “currently exhibits ongoing symptoms.”
Allrounder Daryl Mitchell has been withdrawn from the upcoming fifth T20I against Pakistan by New Zealand, aiming to manage his workload. Mitchell, with two half-centuries in the first four T20Is, will be replaced by Rachin Ravindra, initially rested for the series.
Stead explained the decision, considering Mitchell’s workload and upcoming international commitments after the Pakistan T20Is. With a 4-0 lead, the coach emphasized the importance of managing Mitchell’s role as a three-format player.
We’ve decided to rest Daryl Mitchell for this game, considering the crucial Test matches ahead. As a three-format player, managing his workload is crucial, and he’s likely to play a significant role in the upcoming home season. This break comes at an opportune time, given the series win. Introducing Rachin back into the side is also positive, considering his recent break and match for Wellington Firebirds,” Stead said.
Mitchell has played 28 of New Zealand’s 34 matches since August 30 last year. He missed the six matches in both three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. After the ongoing T20Is against Pakistan, New Zealand is set to host South Africa and Australia for Tests and T20Is.
Regarding Conway’s participation, Stead mentioned that a final decision would be made on the morning of the match. Conway, who missed the fourth T20I due to Covid-19, is still experiencing symptoms, and Stead is hopeful they will clear in the next 24 hours before making a final call.
